All the spaces natural protected Island, the most important, without a doubt, is the Garajonay National Park. With an area of 4,000 Has. and located in the Central peaks of the island, the Park contains a residual of the tertiary laurisilva forest. In it lies the Alto de Garajonay, which crowns the island with an altitude of 1,487 meters.
The forest is composed of a great variety of trees, plants, mosses and lichens that grow thanks to high humidity and constant temperature throughout the year. These conditions remain a vegetable exuberance which, in turn, allows you to catch the water from the fog that comes with the trade winds facilitating infiltration and aquifer recharge. There are more than 1,000 species of vascular plants, of which 30% are endemic of the island, Canary Islands or the Macaronesia in La Gomera.
From the point of view of fauna, the Garajonay exceeds 1,000 catalogued species, the majority invertebrates, being 75 of them endemic to the Park and 150 endemic of La Gomera. This feature represents the greatest concentration of unique species per unit area of Europe. The most emblematic species are turque and Laurel pigeon pigeons. Then there are several species of bats, although what more there are insects, molluscs and Arachnids.
The Garajonay National Park was created in 1981 and was declared World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1986.
